Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone

I first saw Neon Genesis Evangelion over 10 years ago at the age of 15 (or possibly 14). The series might have been written by a self-indulgent suicidal depressive but it can’t be denied that it was a hugely influential series, introducing many to anime. The series was a truly inspiring piece of work, even if the series ending and the 2 films made me want to kill things and scream like a banshee.

Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, the first film in the tetralogy of Rebuild of Evangelion is a retelling of the first 6 episodes of the series . It has better quality animation, some very interesting directional changes that yields a much tighter plotline. And yes, enough changes were made that Shinji is a much more sympathetic character than he was in the series. The film reminded me why I fell in love with the series in the first place, you know, before the happy feelings turned into bitterness and hatred.

Shinji is positioned to be much less of an irritating twerp. His role as a child and a victim is shown in sharp relief; a boy that should have never been put into such a situation in the first place. I admit the directorial/editorial decision to cut out most of the whining helps greatly in the positive evaluation of Shinji’s character.

The plot, as I said earlier is much sleeker and presented in a less confusing manner. Though new viewers may still be confused by the overall plotline of the series, however, considering the series never bothered to clarify at all I really can’t summon any sympathy. Lilith is introduced at what would be considered the beginning of the 6th episode. In fact a whole new scene was created for the introduction of Lilith. In order to create courage and understanding within Shinji so he may fight the Angels Misato takes Shinji down into the basement of NER V to show him the remnants of Lilith pinned to the cross. It is a beautiful scene because it not only introduces the Angel’s motivation, Lilith but it also touches and focuses on the rocky relationship between Misato and Shinji. They are not just commander/mother and subordinate/child; they are two children abandoned by their fathers, alone in the world and so damn afraid. Yet Misato holds onto Shinji’s hands and he in turn grasps hers tightly as the two look upon Lilith.

One other plot and character change is the early introduction of Kaworu, yes, that Kaworu who died for Shinji, loving and believing that a human boy could and can change the world. The one person that loved Shinji unconditionally. It was a pretty awesome moment as I honestly did not expect his presence in the film, not this early on. However, I am very pleased at his presence because I really HOPE for a clearer explanation about his deal. Look, I can hope.

So, in conclusion, the first Rebuild of Evangelion film is pretty damn awesome. Better animation quality, more amazing fight sequences between the Angels and the Evas, a plot that is more clearly defined, and a main character that no longer makes me want to stab him repeatedly. I will be looking forward to the rest of the films with some major expectation (PLEASE LET THERE BE SOME KIND OF HAPPY ENDING!).

Thank-you-thank-you-thank-you for doing a review here! I have hope now! (But... What about Rei? How are they handling Rei? (I confess: white-haired girls with poker-faces are my anime weakness.))

I have to find a subbed version now >.> I downloaded the raw earlier this year, and if you've seen the original series then you can get by, but definitely would like a subbed DVD copy now.

And yes, word to everything above, particularly the fact that movie format means cutting all the needless extras that detracted from the characters and and big budget animation. Srsly, when Ramiel(?) started morphing like some insane 3D origami piece instead of just the static diamond like in the series I almost jumped out of my chair with the squee. (Definitely did the jump for Kaworu's introduction XD) interesting enough they introduced him before Asuka, whose introduction I fully expect will open the next movie, and if you've seen the teaser for the next movie I /think/ they're bringing in a new pilot...

Okay, if Kaworu is actually in it from the first I'll have to drag myself to a viewing somehow. XD
