Although, I don't know if the target audience of Suikoden really is females. I had thought it was more general. Personally I tend to avoid books in general (cause I have too many I need to read) unless recommended to me or spoken of highly XD, but I often find male leads also uncompelling and tend to latch onto the secondaries.
Hmm, perhaps it is a sexuality thing? I recall with Ranma 1/2 fandom, the only one I observed where there were a lot of male writers, that a lot of them focused on the female characters and could get quite passionate about defending them. (Ah, fanboys) Actually, from fanboy behavior in general, I notice that a lot of them spend a lot of time talking about the female charas. (This also ties into the way not all female heavy shows (in terms of numbers) are directed at women, while not all shows that have only male characters are directed at men...)
