So, I went to the library during lunch today to pick up some light reading (NO MORE taxation), and picked up 3 books.

1. Action Chicks, edited by Sherrie A. Inness
2. Our Space, Our Place: Women in the Words of Science Fiction Television, by Sherry Ginn
3. Athena's Daughters: Television's New Women Warriors, edited by Frances Early and Kathleen Kennedy

It is time like these that I wish I had the same type of interest in light reading when I was doing film-studies. As it is I've come to the realisation as to why I prefer to read fan-written wank than academic-written wank. It is the love and the shameless fanaticism fans show for the object of their obsession. The energy comes through in fan-wank that is greatly lacking in academic-written wank, and I find myself missing the humour and the sheer enthusiasm as I’m reading through the articles.

I do like the articles about women in Farscape though.

Yeah. :/ But, like, I know those people have to like that stuff. Right? I mean, half the time, I feel the same way about certain of my classes as I feel about fandom (much <333 and enthusiasm, if slightly fewer uncanon OTPs), and I haven't even made that stuff my job. If I thought I'd ever, ever be qualified, I'd write economic maths books that way. I mean, that stuff is really cool! But lots of us don't see it, because it's hidden behind boring
writing and the authors seriously aren't even trying to reach out.

d00d! Not comforting.

I'd write economic maths books that way EXACTLY! I find economics (and finance) absolutely fascinating, but by the gods my lecturers can put me to sleep faster than anything else on this earth.

Action Chicks is about the female action heroes on television. It covers Xena, Buffy, Ripley and of course Aeryn Sun! (I'm also pretty it talks about Nikita). Content wise, the 3 books is actually quite similar.

I've had a few awesome econs/finance teachers, but they all tend to teach first year courses. Which I understand (don't want to drive them away too soon; older students have already been sucked in), but that's the boring foundation stuff, most of which we already learnt in high school! Put some enthusiastic teachers in the high-level courses!

Do they cover the same ground, or is it all different material or told from a different perspective? They sound pretty interesting, but I think I'd have to actually watch some of those shows before I tried to understand the meta academic essays. :D
