A Supernatural 410 question

Right at the end; Dean crying while describing hell. Did it seem like it was Jensen crying and not Dean? It is really strange but when Dean started to really lose it I swear it seemed as if it was Jensen as opposed to Dean crying.

It is hard to describe, but it really threw me while I was watching it especially with the way Jensen delivered "I wish I couldn't feel anything Sammy." The whole thing just IRRITATES me, not saying Jensen is a bad actor just that I couldn’t get into the emotional side of it because I keep on thinking 'JENSEN IS CRYING!’

Also, [livejournal.com profile] nekomancy, want to go see Twilight together? I don’t want to see it alone, I’d feel all weird. I think it is being released on the 11th December. Done.

Haha, I had the opposite reaction. Dean was definitely more Jensen for me in 410, and I felt it was especially noticeable given that it's one of a two-parter ep. He even looked different, idk. But I actually really dug it. I wouldn't put it down to bad acting either (bias aside =P), not in the sense that he's trying too hard to be something he's not. It felt more natural, and I like to read it as an aspect of Dean that we've not yet seen simply because the circumstances were not right (or bad, as the case may be). I was thinking, wow, Jensen really had to dig into more of his real self for 410, and I dunno, I read it as a mark of deep acting dedication that he was willing to expose (or take a risk, even) more of himself, especially for that last scene. So in a self-reflexive sense of watching, it actually gave the scene more authentic and subsequently emotional impact for me. It also helps that it's a characterisation that is believable given the complexity of Dean's character - by that, I mean that at the very least the possibility for such a facet of his character was there, and it wasn't an adverse 180-degree OOC characterisation.

...um yes, obviously we must talk. =D

Oh, that's so funny, because for me it was totally Dean.

Do you watch any of the interviews and behind-the-scenes stuff, because I don't and I wonder if my lack of knowledge of the actor influences how I watch the scene?

I had this long talk with [livejournal.com profile] perseid about Dean in 410. It was interesting because we both agreed that it was different from how Jensen normally acts as Dean. In fact on rewatching the episode 'Dean' was all over the place from an emotional level. I think it wasn't till 410 that I realised just how consistent Jensen plays Dean. That no matter how bad things were Dean was always Dean. And it was very strange seeing Dean different. By no means is it bad acting, just a very interesting choice that Jensen decided to deliver that scene and well the rest of the episode in such an emotionally open way. [livejournal.com profile] perseid said that it was a very brave and deliberate choice of acting and I agree with her 100%. For me, it was odd, because it made me become aware that Jensen was playing Dean differently. Not bad different, just different, and I think it made me realise just how good he is.

Yes, I tend to watch a lots of interviews and behind the scenes footage, and there was so much Jensen in that last scene that I did a double take. Jensen in interviews is much more honest and much more open than Dean ever will, and I the way Jensen played Dean in 410 makes sense but it was just such disconcerting moment for me.

ARGH! Hard to articulate, but it is a good performance, it is just something I wasn’t expecting, and as a consequence made me realise just how Jensen has been playing Dean for the past 3 and half seasons.

I have no idea whether this made any sense to you.

*laughs* it is hard to articulate this! I've like, deleted this comment five times.

You're absolutely right: we're getting a new look at Dean, who is maybe less stable and was especially unstable in the face of 410, but it's definitely not the way we expect Dean to act...and I'm going to leave it at that because when I try to expand more I end up with impossible sentences and contradictory statements. ;)
