mini-update

Feel as if I'm gnawing on my own liver.

There was Uni work today, but otherwise re-read bits of Eyeshield 21 (match against the NASA Aliens.) Will blog about it when I can actually form some sort of coherent thought beyond ‘Hiruma is COOL!’ or 'Sena as Eyeshield is AWESOME!' and you know, the feeling of gnawing on my own liver.

But isn't it about football? That crosses the line for me. I'll read about tennis, speed skating, or ping pong, but football is just too much sport.

Darling, I'm obsessive about sports manga/anime, and I'll argue till I'm blue in the face that through a series of items that PoT is not a sports anime/manga. I watch sports series/manga for the characters, for the way they live, breathe for something they love beyond reason. I watch/read it for the sheer energy that sports series has. It is all about respecting your rivals, being better than what you were, and overcoming odds, and more often than not crying with the characters when the lose (because dammit, proper sport series means that the main hero will ALWAYS suffer some form of Failure to reach a new level of brilliance.)

And Eyeshield 21 is up there with the good sports series, such as Hajime no Ippo (BESTEST SERIES EVER!) It is unbelievably energetic, and like all good sports series somewhere along the way you become completely obsessed with the game the characters are involved in because they are so passionate about it. I do highly recommend the series. Beside, who cares if it is football, racing, or igo, when it comes down to it it is about the characters and way they live.

Heh, I agree that ES21 is, despite all of the unrealism and the way it is more crack than TeniPuri, in a way, a much better sports series, because the main team loses so much, and I oddly take the characters much more seriously than the TeniPuri ones. The Devil Bats are in a way such a hard luck team that you end up rooting for them, despite their trash-talking (well, that's only Hiruma, really) image.

[It only gets better! The current arc is 'edge of your seat' nail-biting drama.]

I may be getting fast internet connection soon ^__^V So, DOWNLOADING manga will be IMPORTANT! ES21 is LOVE as I have a major soft spot for sports series heroes and teams who start off with potential but have to work their asses off to get better. Furthermore, my favorite sports heroes are ones that have a One True Rival (they have other rivals in the interim, but it is the OTR that is their final goal, and more often than not it takes them the whole damn series before the two can actually have their official match.) Anyways, I think one of the reason that one tend to take E21 characters more seriously is because you get to see how much hard work, how much effort they put into becoming what they are, and when they fail (because by the gods, they will) it is heart wrenching because it is so damn unfair and so sad. Furthermore, more often than not, you start the series with a character who is often a novice about a sports (from the top of my head; Hajime no Ippo, Hikaru no Go, Slam Dunk, etc.,) and you learn with them, you are happy for them when they earn a win, and you cry for them when they lose! It is all so BEAUTIFUL! (In a manly, sports way XP)

BTW: You need to watch Hajime no Ippo. Once again I recommend the anime because OMFG! To see the actual matches being animated (especially when the animators know what they are doing, none of this slow-motion crap, or fights that drag into 2 or more episodes) is a pleasure, and I admit by the end of the series I was so involved that at one point I was jumping up and down and screaming because of the tension (mum wasn’t impressed.)

:DDDDD Sounds awesome... If I lived in your country I would so mail you DVDROMS containing stuff, because you always can't see stuff because you don't have an HS connection.

Yeah, it is much better when there are really strong rivals, whose own development is underscored (White Knights). I wanted to say that ES21 was realistic, but it of course isn't, so it's like their emotions are somehow more compelling because they struggle, and yes, you will see as you get on in the manga more victory snatched from the jaws of defeat, but also some heartbreaking losses, and ah, the characters are just so quirky and strange and I should post more about it.

Eeeh, will watch sometime, even if I know zip about boxing.

I know exactly what you mean... hmm, I'll be purchasing a DVD burner sometime after my exams; would you like some anime mailed to you? (Like Honey and Clover XD and possibly Hajime no Ippo... as soon as I find out which episode I'm missing.) It'll have to wait till after June 18th but it should be no problem afterwards ^__^

victory snatched from the jaws of defeat, but also some heartbreaking losses

I'm one of those fans who cry while watching/reading sports anime/manga series, it is kind of, um, sad -_-;;

You don't need to know anything about boxing; the fact is Ippo doesn't anything about boxing either, so, he learns, and you learn with him. It is all very good!

:))) That's probably why I like it! I laughed a lot at one of my good friends when she first got into Prince of Tennis, because I was imagining that it was really about tennis, not about the rivalries between boys who play a cross between tennis & quidditch. (Likewise, Slam Dunk and I'll/Generation Basket aren't really about basketball, are they?) I like those themes most of all when they don't come with sports!

I just have so much antipathy towards sports that I really can't get past long enough to enjoy the series. I blame my pro athlete father. :D

I might read Hajime no Ippo one day, though.

*laughs* I cna understand!

(I'd argue against that for the simple reason that somewhere along way it does end up being about the sports because the characters love it so much and by default you end loving it with them. And I have a friend who will argue till she's blue in the face that Slam Dunk is about Basketball and life, and I admit I can't disagree with her on that one.) I LOVE those themes when it comes with sports! Because you rarely find that kind of energy or passion in other series.

It is OK, we all have out shortcomings. XP

GOOD! But I honetly suggest the anime, it is awesome!
