Suikoden 1 in relation to plot coherency and characters kick Suikoden 2's arse. McDohl Rulez, and while Riou is cute in a squishy toy way he is nonetheless rather boring. Though number two did have MORE Leon, and Shu, and the COOK OFFS! Suikoden 2 is still a good game just not as good as one because the plot still does not make sense to me, and while I like Jowy the way he did things is still incomprehensible to me. Suikoden 3 made me happy 'cos Geddeo is awesome and I want to be Chris, the plot was damn awesome (COHERENCY) and there are MORE Silverbergs. Though Hugo's chapters were a bit boring (LOTS!). So, ranking.

1. Suikoden 1!!! McDohl!!!!
2. Suikoden 3 (to be fair, game play wise Suikoden 3 is superior to One, BUT Suikoden 1 has McDohl! A Flik that was a Punk, a Thief Viktor, Odessa, Mathiu, and Kalekka!)
3. Suikoden 2 (it had a lots of good things going for it BUT the weak motivations or at least the lack of logical planning, and the lack of a strong lead made this game playable but NOT great.)

As for Suikoden IV... haven't played it and will NOT let anyone sway my decision until I play it.

More beer then sleep.

This is where I directly oppose you! For I love Suikoden 2 with all my fangirl heart. XD

For one, I actually adored Nanami (eee! Protective Big Sis! Kicks ass!) and I actually felt the cast of Suiko 2 had even more personality. Flik and Viktor had matured into a great partnership, and so on.

I found the plot in Suiko 1 very straightforward, but Suiko 2 developed into something like a chess game or possibly even a go game, with strategists on both sides claiming territory the minute someone's back was turned. Riou's lack of personality didn't bother me terribly, because it was a refreshing change to see everyone him really shine.

I knew it!

Agree with you on Nanami! For She kicked MUCH ass indeed. I think most of the 'speaking' cast of Sui2 was definitely more interesting and better played out.

However, I have to disagree with you on the plot. I liked the differing strategies, I loved Shu's and Leon's opposing views but I found the resolution, the way Jowy set about reaching his goals a complete let domn that made me scream in frustration (well, kicked the pillow to the other side of the room.) If they had only spent more time on Leon's agendas or at least made Jowy's actions of reaching his goals less confusing I'd have loved the game (even if Riou isn't as cool as McDohl ^_^).

The problem with sui2 is that Riou was not a strong character, and for me to really love a game beyond all reason I have to like/love/worship the ground the main character walks on. I love the politcal background of sui2, I love the characters in sui2 (new and old; SHU! FLIK!), but it was the execution actions/plans on Jowy's part that drove me completely insane. Why couldn't they have let Leon had the limelight?!

*solemnly* It was Young Angst, my dear, Young Angst.

No, seriously. You know how movie directors like to have a love story in every single plot (so that the common man can identify with my epic! they cry, but I just want to kill them), so did they foolishly believe the Young Angst would help teenagers all over the world feel that Jowy and Riou understand their Teen Angst too!
