suiko4 questions

Feeling much better now. Got my mid-term results back (for two units), and while the maths mid-term was a bit of a let-down I'm still at 80% average for Corporations Law. There might be hope for me yet. In addition, I played three hours of Suikoden 4. This involved running back and forth trading items (need money), and recruiting like mad (I want Ted NOW!) Reinbach is a hoot, and I still haven't settled on a permanent part set-up yet.

So, questions for Suikoden 4 players:

Q1. Is their a recommended party(s) set-up? (Most efficient. I aways try to have one magic user and two tanks, not including the Hero, 'cos usually he's the all rounder.) I already know you need two parties for the final confrontation. So, 2 set-ups would be appreciated.

I'm currently using Chiepoo, Kika, and Sigurad.

Q2. What's the best way to get Potch? (Trading, to me, seem to be the most efficient at the present time.)

I know I put my people in because of the combos and not so much because of magic. *g* Good stuff.. I love that you can "level up" the combos. Never tried the trading post though *shot*

Q1. Party set up I think, should depend on your playing style. Do you prefer physical attacks to magic? And do you have a ton of mushrooms with you if you do prefer magic? ;D I'm not sure if you're asking for a recommended setup for the final boss or for the game in general, as I just tended to switch my parties around while playing the game. (Leveling them up before the final boss is really easy by using the training hall.)

My parties for the final dungeon were as follows:
Secondary party: Helmut, Travis, Jeremy, Aldo (healer) <-- my pretty boys party. lol.
+ The boss you fight is ridiculously easy. No real need for magic on this one. I just had their weapons at lvl.15 plus everyone either had the Diamond or Platinum armor set equipped.

Final party: Hero, Hervey, Sigurd (healer), Ted (healer)
+ Admittedly died once for this boss. At least one pair with a high-damage combo attack would be very helpful during this battle. Also, two healers are a must, in case something happens to your other healer. The Hero does pretty well with a water rune, so you can choose to make him a healer instead, though I just opted to give him a rage rune and a fury rune to deal a mad amount of damage. Though the fury rune might do better for another character who won't be doing anything else but physical attacks.

Q2: Trading is definitely the best way to make money. I can make a million potch after an hour or two of trading. Though having a prosperity rune (the eldest brother of those trio you recruit in the hot springs has one) equipped while leveling up also helps.

I actually made a trading faq to make trading a helluva lot easier for me. I can upload if you want.

Q1. Thanks, it was more in relation to the game in general, as I made the assumption that if you use the same characters they will be the logical people you take into the final boss fights. The problem with Suiko4 is that I don't have any favourite characters (as opposed to the previous games where if I didn't get my fav team line I got very upset.) So, I've been experimenting with combinations and such. However, as a result I don't know who I should stick with when it comes to important boss fights.

But to answer your question, I'm quite flexible in my magic/fighter ratio, mainly because suiko games doesn't take forever to cast a spell, and usually area effects spells are very helpful (the dwarves in suiko1 and the damn music-singing things in suiko2). Mushrooms? (I just got Mao and Nao, and I have been messing with the conditions for growing mushrooms, but I haven't actually esplored the properties of them. Hmm, note to self, check out mushrooms.)

So, definitely need a tank. I have been messing with the idea of using Lino, but his accuracy is not as good as I want it, and I like Kika mainly because she can use her Rune to do a pretty good amount of damage. In addition, if I'm outnumbered I just use her and the Hero's comb. attack.

Q2. YES! Please. I only figured this out yesterday when I noticed how much Mordo was willing to pay for pearls, I made over 200,000 potch. So happy. Having a guide would be great, trying to level everyone's weapon to lvl 12 is really expensive.

The nice thing about Suikoden 4 is that you can mess around with your party during the entire game (but well enough to get you through the other boss fights at least) since the training hall gives you an easy way to level characters up (granted this probably isn't a good alternative for those who don't want to fight more extra battles than they have to).

I don't think a tank is as necessary in Suiko4 as it was in say... Suiko3, in which a tank with a firefly rune was almost your best way of survival - especially in strategy battles.

Granted, general set-up for your party would probably comprise of two attackers (or attacker/all-rounder) and one magic user, except pure magic-users are a bit tiresome to bring along on regular battles, since their physical attacks are so weak. I did gallivant around with Jeanne and Viki both in my party for a while just for the heck of it though. The thing is you'll really have to keep switching characters around if you want to discover combo attacks.

Mao and Nao is fun if only to play the mint and mushroom ant armies. <3 Otherwise, if you're not a big magic-user you'll probably not have much use for them. I didn't use a single mushroom while I was playing the game.

Admittedly, I didn't play around as much with the characters during my first play through, as I was planning to do all that the second time around, except I got distracted by other games in the middle of my second game.

Q2: Those pearls are love. I just buy every single pearl and sell when the price in Mordo hits 8000-8500. And the Trading FAQ here (http://arcina.com/temp/tradepost_summary.txt). It tells you what to buy/sell in each city. It made my life a whole lot easier. I have price ranges (by city and by item) on separate sheets, but the range of where it's best to sell is always the same. (I am hoping of course, that these don't change per game.)

I find that I don't mind the battles as long as there is a purpose (i.e. leveling like mad, 'cos d00d! I LOVE seeing a low level-character speeding through the levels after KO'ing a high level creature. It is so satisfying.) And I have been messing with the party set-up, even got some of the real high-level combination spells working. And ohhh 'Thunder God' is kind of cool. Next on my agenda I'm going to try and get some of the mythical group combination attacks working. Reinbach's rune attack is just fecking hilarious. The spot lights! *laughs*

I have to agree with you, I find that the characters in suiko4 are bit better rounded. My favourite party consist of four all-rounders rather than a specific tank, two all-rounders and a magic-user. And omfg, I remember some of those fights in suik03. The strategy battles caused me a bit of pain in the beginning until I figured out the trick.

Mao and Nao! Mushroom ant armies! WAHH! This is sooooo fun!

First play-thru, I'm trying to get all 108 stars. That's pretty much my only goal, I can get everything else in my second play-thru.

Q2: Exactly. I go to Middleport and Nay-Nal like mad, buying ANY pearl they have, sit back and check up on Mordo every 20mins or so, and sell them as a batch at 8000. Such wonderful potch-earner *_* And THANK YOU very much! The FAQ makes it much easier to remember where to buy and sell items. I'm hoping it won't change either.
