In theory, a Jutsu can be performed as long as you have the usage of at least six of your fingers.
A year into his stint as an Anbu, Shikamaru found out that you have to use all of your fingers in order to perform the more effective Justu. With three broken fingers (thumb included) on his left hand, two broken ribs, and a S-class criminal that had been hunting him for two days, Shikamaru was pretty sure that the likelihood of his watching clouds on the grassy hills of Leaf was getting smaller by the seconds.
Options had run out and back up were not going to appear any time soon, desperation was long overdue. To be honest, it was a good idea. He had used his right hand to forcefully position the broken fingers of his left hand into the necessary motions of a Justu.
He couldn't recall the sensation of pain, but Shikamaru does recall the cold sweat that rolled down his skin, the taste of blood in his mouth as his teeth bit through the flesh of his lips and the cracking sound of his finger bones as he bent the appendages the way he needed them to be.
Figures, that he had fallen unconscious before he could finish the Jutsu.

That's what I thought to but I couldn't helpt it. Shikamaru just seem to be the type to have bad things happen to him 'cos he's how it is, but that doesn't mean fate isn't a bitch ^^;;;
One grammatical point (and I apologise if I'm being rude): before an -ing verb, you'd use the possessive form, so it'd be "the likelihood of his watching clouds".
