[livejournal.com profile] kakoten and [livejournal.com profile] soubiless have some intersting argument about seeing slash in everything.

I agree with judging an anime on its own merits rather than the supposed ghei subtext it contains. However, I would say that wheather a person -after- seeing the series sees the slash or not is another story.

I started watching PoT and GetBackers because I got good recommendations about the two series, and NOT because of the supposed ghei subtext. I didn't know what the characters looked like in PoT and GB. To tell you the truth I didn't even know anything about the two series beyond the fact that PoT was a sports anime, and GB was an adventure series.

Well, I like(d) both of the series. GB, because it got into the storyline damn fast, the characters were reasonably amusing, but it was the plot that carried me through. I still don't see the ghei between Ban and Ginji (but Kazuki and Juubei is so getting it on), and that's my opinion. The reason I stopped watching it is because, well, I think it pretty much sucked after the Mabuex arc, and the manga is just not sufficiently interesting enough to keep me watching it.

PoT, I like because it's funny, it's characters are truly different and unique. Oh alright, the whole cast is cracked, but that's what I love about the series. I can see the slash, but it is not important for me in liking the series.

I see no problem with seeing slash. BUT I do make the distinction, that yes, it's all in my head, and no, most people probably don't see it. I understand that, I'm fine with that. I don't feel bad about it because I don't watch the series for the ghei, I watch because I care for the characters, and because of the story. If it has crappy characterisation and bad plot I'd drop it like a tonne of brick. Yes, I admit I was suckered in by the pretty that is YnM and DNAngel, but I quickly discovered my mistake, and look, I'm not following them anymore, am I? Actually, while we're on that tangent, anyone interested in buying DNANgel off me? ^^;;;

I don't see a problem with seeing slash potential in anime/manga/whatever after you've seen it. I DO see a problem with people making a judgement about a series SOLELY based on the fact whether the series contains slash subtext or not.

On that note, it also piss me off that there are people who only watch anime, or consider it to be the best just because it has pretty guys, or pretty artwork. I like my entertainment because I'd like to think they have wonderful characters and good plots.

The slash-subtext I see does NOT make a series for me. If it did I'd still be watching/reading YnM.

So, you people, go and watch Hajime no Ippo, and Berserk. The former, because it's just such a cool sports anime series (good fights, really good fights, lovable main character, and really cool rivals). The latter because the storyline is amazing, the characterisation is superb. (plug, plug, plug).

Is it really -that- big an issue? I'm not a huge fan of "play for the gay", but when people enjoy whatever series, for whatever reason, I'm not prepared to make any judgements, because to me, it's to each their own.

I'm puzzled when people get worked up over issues like this. So people jump to conclusions (based on little to no evidence). Happens all the time. Just a thought.

Mmm well, if it makes it for them it makes it for them. I don't think it's any business of mine if other people don't have the same motivations for watching TV as I do. XD;; (FTR I won't watch a series just because it has pretty guys or BL subtext, apart from sacrificing myself on the blood-soaked altar of teh Weiss just so I can legitimately be "in" the farking fandom, but I will watch it just because it has great animation.) Basically, it's just like dumping on women who watch soccer because they find the players dishy. You could, but... *shrugs* And I know plenty of guys who follow Prince of Tennis for the plot, let alone me mum.

The thing about TeniPuri is that it's a lost cause, and was a lost cause before it so much as passed the two-tankoubon mark in Jump. Back when Slam Dunk was running the publishers had no idea what the female fen were on about (and SD changed the face of BL art completely, by the by). Now the yaoi following is not so much underground as aboveground, in the sense that no subtext is truly inadvertent. The publishers pander even if the mangaka doesn't - and with GetBackers, frankly, the mangaka are pandering like mad. Magazine-serialised manga is always interactive, it's just that no one ever admits that it is. And if the fangirl contigent is large and vocal enough, then yes their wishes will be taken into account.

That being said I actually think Prince of Tennis is less slashy than Slam Dunk. *g*

Total agreement with the SD being more slashy then PoT ^__^ But my LUV for PoT knows no bound.

Weiss, is one of those phenomenons where I watched the anime just so I can read the fanfiction. Which really wasn't much help considering just how different canon and fanon really is. Hmm, probably can relate it back to the Harry Potter fandom, but the HP fandom scare me, and really, to tell the truth I'm just there for the fics. Everythign else about it either amuse me greatly or scare me very much. I don't have a problem with people watching things becos of pretty pics, or whatever other reason, I just get rather self-righeous when they proclaim the series to be the best thing since cheese (yum, cheese) just b'cos of the pretty art/whatever.

And the pandering for all the different anime/manga to fans (whatever maybe your poison; little girls, yaoi, etc.) have become much more, uhh, explicit. I watch with much amusement... except when something just gets to me. Which, thank gods, isn't as often as it seems ^^ Most of the time I'm amused by the pandering, and equally amused at the slobbering on both fanbois and fangrrls. Ah, the amusement ^^ It's good to be alive.
