Heroes - before I lose the thought

So, I have seen about 11 episodes of Heroes, and there are some truly awesome bits to the series - good plot, nice effects and of course HIRO and ANDO! But you know, I just can't get into the series, and I remember commenting to someone awhile back that the portrayal of certain female characters on the show makes me highly uncomfortable. Thinking about it I do believe that is one of the major issues I have with the series - I can't articulate it well enough, all I know is that whenever I think of the female characters on Heroes I think of women who inevitably gets sexualised in one way or another. Honestly, think of all female characters on Heroes, would you want any of them to be a female role model?

As for the race issue on Heroes - I don't even want to think about it, because Hiro and Ando's characterisation are awesome, but Mohinder makes me wince. So, um, overall - the show is something I'd watch if it is there but I'd not keep nor follow.

I don't know what it means, that Mohinder is a white guy with a tan. The actor's name is Sendhil Ramamurthy, so it's not like they cast a white guy to pretend to be indian. Or is it that he's too westernized? But they had him participating in religious rituals, which is of course a shortcut but how else his cultural heritage could be handled, I'm not sure. But yeah. DUMB. Maybe it's supposed to be a scientist thing.

And yes, there is Nikki's husband, but there is also Nikki. And there is Simone. Also, Petrellis are technically white I suppose, but not WASP, which probably counts? I'm very dense about race issues! I'm not even sure if Isaak counts as a racial minority.

Nikki is an awful character I think, very old skool comic book, as is that girl, Mohinder's neighbourg. But I think Claire is awesome, even as a role model.

Aw, I'd watch it just for Hero.

Mohinder - what [livejournal.com profile] nekomancy said in the below comments, because honestly, she has summed it up way better than I ever could.

Nikki's husband is considered a criminal - the only African American on the show who has a reasonable amount of dialogue. Simone, um, I'm not sure how much you have seen of this series, so no spoilers on my part. Isaak - I don't have enough understanding of the whole Jewish people in the US to make a call on that one. Petrellis - from what the series has provided, comes across as white. Nikki makes me want to scream and pull my hair out. I actually like Claire, but the 'attempted' rape scenario made me want to throw things at the screen and shout at the writers. Obviously all popular teenage boys are rapists, and of course the only way the show can push Bennett into homocidal rage is if someone tries to rape Claire.

Being dense about race issues doesn't always mean a bad thing - because it means you view everyone in a similar fashion, which is a bonus. However, it is there, and as [livejournal.com profile] nekomancy commented the lack of depiction of things on shows can be a problem in itself.

I don't usually make a big deal of it, but 'Heroes' honestly rub me the wrong way, and I can't give you a clear idea as to why.
