LJ 'official' response

Damn it.

"Our decision here was not based on pure legal issues. It was based on what community we want to build and what we think is appropriate within that community and what's not."

--Barak Berkowitz, chairman and CEO, Six Apart
.

So, official news release, has the recent FanLib outrage taught you nothing? This may possibly mean I will be moving away from LJ sometime soon. Yes, I do have a permanent account, but honestly, the type of 'community' Mr. Berkowitz is thinking of creating doesn't seem to be something I want to be part of.

Nothing is set in stone yet, but wow, that's many a customer that LJ just lost.

ETA: Well we really screwed this one up…. Me feelings = ambivalent. The official press release still make LJ sounds like 'If you are not with us, you are against us' mentality, and I'm really uncomfortable with it. Also, the fact that survivors of abuse-support communities were deleted while Neo-Nazi supporters' communities are still around, while, I'm definitely feeling ambivalent here.

It's really petty, but has anyone else noticed that the official post seems to be poorly written? I keep wanting to put commas in. XD

You are adorable! *pets Cthulhu's tummy*.

Honestly, I thought it was meant to be that way. I often get accused of over using commas, so when I don't see them I just assume it wasn't meant to be used. But petty? You? Never! ;p

You may be seeing me using Wordpress in a month or two.

Eh, it's petty of me because he was of course doing it ASAP, but it just sort of underscores how rushed LJ has been about this whole thing.

Ah... wordpress.com, or your own domain?

He had 48 hours, he has a PR, he could have gotten an editor. No, you definitely should not feel any form of petty. The board of management screwed up, and I think the reason I feel so ambivalent is because of trust. No trust on my part.

My own domain. This ought to be new and interesting, but it will take me 2 months before I can organise my credit card, purchase domain name and server and slowly reconnect with people (flist).

I have to wonder, who is LJ's PR department, and why have they not been active? Why is the president the one making the statement?

That sounds pretty cool. Maybe there are some interesting people out in blogland, also.

PR department - I honestly think this caught them completely flat-footed, it seem as if they had no idea it was going to explode in their faces. You would think after the reaction to FanLib they would have handled this better. Though it is becoming clearer and clearer that online companies have no idea how to handle their customer base, or how to handle their customer dissatisfaction. I keep on seeing PR department attempting to solve the problem as if it was an RL problem, and that's the worst thing they could ever do. You do NOT ignore your customer/target group. Yet, companies continues to screw up. People pay for a service, and they can want an immediate reply.

I want to set something up that can be self-sustaining (pay for server space & domain name). And while blogland has many interesting people it is the community aspect of LJ that made me stay with it for such a long time. Either way, it ought to be an interesting journey.
