As I watched Mary run into Sam’s room and spat out ‘You,’ to the YED I had this bizarre thought - what if Mary was one of the generations of special children that YED talked about? The major difference being Mary’s generation screwing up all of his plans. I think Mary was like Ava, survived long enough, and became powerful enough to walk out of that town alive. I think she won that competition, and then had the gull to say fuck off to the YED. And the YED can recognize a dead-end (killed Jessica because he didn’t want Sam to become mundane), know when to walk away from a losing hand and BIDE for his time. See, if Mary was a special kid at one point, then there would be a high likelihood that her children would inherit her ability as well. The Demon have time, he can afford to wait. So, what if he waited and waited until little Mary gave birth to her first-born.
It always struck me as odd that Kripke and others would NOT pay special interest to the myths involved with a first-born, being the first-born son holds much power. What if the YED stood over Dean’s crib when he was 6 months old, and what if the former was greatly disappointed because little Dean Winchester was completely normal? Except, maybe Dean wasn’t, maybe Mary was smart enough to realize it wasn’t over, maybe she did something to hide Dean, or possibly nip any sort of potential in Dean before it could become a beacon? But this is where I stumble – why didn’t she do the same for Sam? One possibility - Mary had let her guard down, four years and not a peep from the YED, though I admit the more likely explanation would be Mary ‘burning’ all her abilities out as a consequence of hiding Dean, or possibly removing it all together to become invisible.
Either way, look at how Dean REACTED to Andy’s MESSAGE/visions! The really important question is – WHY DID IT HURT HIM SO MUCH?! Dean reacted to it as if it was someone taking a MALLET to his brain, yet at NO point did Andy say that his powers caused other people pain! Andy would’ve mentioned it if it did cause people pain! In fact, thinking back to Simon Said, Dean was ACTIVELY fighting against Andy’ control, despite the fact that EVERYONE else (beside the special kids) could NOT fight against suggestions, hell they didn’t even know they were being controlled. It is almost as if Dean have an AUTOMATIC defense mechanism that fights off against supernatural possession or say a psychic attempting to mess with him. This is NOT saying he’d be successful fighting off possession, it just means that any supernatural force that attempts to get to Dean on a mental/spiritual level have a way harder fight on their hands. What if - when Mary made Dean invisible by removal of his abilities she also removed most of his innate protection against other ‘special’ children. That by making Dean normal she also made him defenseless against the other kid’s powers (at least the psychic ones), but she can’t remove it completely if it was part of Dean. So Dean’s body/spirit automatically attempt to fight off possession and special kids’ abilities but WITHOUT the pool of power that Dean would be able to draw on, as Mary had removed it.
Next point – the YED keep on DISMISSING Dean; I am very SUSPICIOUS of this, if he was so dismissive of Dean he could’ve killed him way earlier. It is almost as if he’s trying to draw the real Dean out by repeatedly fucking up Sam’s life. Not saying that Sam is not important, or one of his favourite. It just means the YED is not stupid enough to let a potential soldier like Dean go if he could someone undo what Mary did. And the only way to push Dean to his boundaries is through Sam.
See, if I was the YED and I wanted the BEST soldier I would try to get as many potentials as possible before I have the Demonic version of Survivor show. And if there’s even a possibility of Dean being a special kid I’d go out of my way to set up TESTS to figure out whether he was one or not because Dean Winchester is a force to be reckoned with. For example, oh, I don’t know, I’d see whether he was IMMUNE to a DEMONIC VIRUS! I’m telling you on re-watching SPN 2, I realized there has been many comments about ‘Tests’, hell, even Meg blahed about tests in BUABS. So, what if up till now all the tests were aimed at Dean because there is NO point in testing Sam, especially when it was pretty much a done deal since the day the YED fed Sam his BLOOD!
I- I think the YED lied to Sam when he said he only wanted one soldier, I think the YED wants the best, and the best is Sam and Dean Winchester, together. And I think season 2 has been about testing Dean, to see whether he is a special kid, because Mary did her job well in protecting her oldest, yet failed her youngest, hence the apology during ‘Home’. I think the YED is laying the groundwork to welcome both Winchesters as his Generals.
Now to see whether I am right or not!
