What the fuck.
Evidently, Mr. Robinov must learn to look outside of commercial forays for inspiration like 'Amelia' and 'Leon: The Professional'.
Also - a question (as you are way more up-to-date with Heroes than I am), I watched the premiere episode of s2 a few days ago. The floating boy outside of Claire's bedroom? He is a creepy Evil bad guy, right? Because if this is the production team's idea of puppy love I'm so not giving this season any more chances.
I really don't know about that boy, West (what a silly name). What I do know is that TPTB are planning to pair them up, so yes, it is probably an attempt at puppy!love. I just don't plain like this guy, and I think if the writers go ahead and pair these 2 up I'd have completely lost my respect for ALL the female characters in the series. Because hey, dating a creepy stalker guy whose only way of getting to know you better is to insult you? Bad judgement there, girl.
Fortunately, I watch both 'Heroes' and 'Supernatural' for the male characters, so at least I've something else to focus on when the female characters fail. And they killed off my favourite female character early in S1 anyway. Why are female characters so hard for writers to get anyway? Oh, snap. I just figured it out: because most TV writers are largely guys. Duh.
Wow. Why doesn't this surprise me. I was creeped out when Clark Kent spied on Lana, I doubt I will be less creeped out about Claire and this West guy. Stalking is not romantic, and any person who accepts that as the foundation of a relation needs a serious wake up call.
I think I react badly to 'Heroes' because they set out to be 'multicultural', to be all about equality amongst the sexes, and yet they consistently falls into the trap of stereotyping gender, roles and everything else. I have to admit, while I'm pretty happy with SPN's depiction of women on the show (when they appear), I'm highly uncomfortable with the way that they make around 70% of their victims female. Yes, there are a lots mention of men dying, but they don't spend a copious amount of camera time on it. Except for the Sam and Dean torture, but they win so it doesn't count. Overall, I'm much happier with SPN's way of depicting female characters then 'Heroes'. This easily can be the result of having 2 main female writers on the show.
But yes, male TV producers and writers. Gee, and people wander why I have so many issues with female characters.
Tim Kring did mention several times in interviews that his vision for 'Heroes' is that of multiculturalism, because the idea of superpowers being genetically derived suggests that anyone on the planet can get them. I found his attempts at it weak, though. Did you know that in the first draft, the character Hiro wasn't even in there? He was added only when Kring's wife thought the show was too angsty, and not because she thought the cast was too white. This season they added a pair of Latino siblings, but it rubs me wrongly in that I feel they were added for the sake of adding coloured characters, rather than because coloured characters will better serve the need of the storyline compared to white characters.
With SPN, I must confess that I'm a little uncomfortable with the way Dean breezes through one-night-stands. More in a "if Dean sleeps around a lot, he's a stud. But if a female character sleeps around, she is a slut" way.
I'll buy the female-as-victims angle, because it makes sense. If I were a crazed spook/monster/ghost/whatever, I'll make it a point to target someone physically smaller/weaker. Why would I want to give myself trouble by going for someone who can fight back? At least, that's how I see it.
Female writers tend to be typecasted into writing romance/drama stuff rather than action-y shows such as Heroes and SPN. I say we're lucky to even get them writing for our shows. Though, with Heroes I am really struggling to find a female role model, or even just a likable female character. As for SPN, we mostly have chick-of-the-week, and so far characters like Meg, Ellen and Jo I've not been able to identify with on any level. Sufficient to say, I'm watching for the guys!
not because she thought the cast was too white.
Oh man, if nothing else that’s just retarded. I know lots of people watch the show for Hiro. Either way I find myself not being able to watch the show without having my blood pressure sky-rocket. I think in many ways I’m sick of this utter blindness to the gender and race discussion. Many people tell me that they are sick of discussing it, I get tired of discussing it, but I don’t stop, because I don’t want my children to grow up in a society where it is OK to stalk girls, where supposedly large groups of ethnic people in a white country is ignored.
See, I don’t have a problem with Dean sleeping around mainly because I don’t equate female characters that sleep around with sluts. Usually I’m all for it, barring a few exceptions (Anita Blake comes to mind, but that’s more to do with the fact she was cheating on 2 people while sleeping with the third. Cheating not on, sleeping with one-night stands; awesome!).
In relation to the victims - OK, your Earth logic defeat my own logic.
See, at least SPN’s chick of the week actually comes across as real rather than card board cut out. I like the fact that SPN have a range of women (the single mothers, the daughters, the evil ones, and the professional women), and while their screen time is short I often remember this with very irritation or much love. Ohh, see I love Jo, because in many ways I can identify with her, and Meg for me wasn’t human to begin with, so in many ways she’s in another category altogether (‘Beings I wouldn’t mind sleeping with if I wasn’t in a loving relationship already’). But in conclusion, yes, I watch SPN for the Winchesters, but then again SPN never lied about what its show was going to be about in the first place.
Don't quote me on the Hiro thing. It is widely known that Hiro was added at the advice of his wife because she thought it was too angsty. She might have suggested Hiro's ethnicity to her husband, but if she did there certainly have been no mentions of it. I'm just glad they came up with the character of Hiro in the final product because without him, I wouldn't have been hooked long enough for the Petrelli brothers to get their hands on me.
I personally don't mind discussions on gender and ethnic equality, because I think these issues are more relevant than ever with the globalisation of our world. But I also dislike it when people see this issue EVERYWHERE. Some freak on a 'Heroes' community complained that the writers only killed black characters. She was roundly shot down when a dedicated fan came back to her with the kill statistics for S1 of the show, proving to her that they killed more white characters than characters of any other ethnicity in the whole of S1. Some people just see things they want to see, ya know?
I reserve judgement on both guys and girls who sleep around unless I have all sides of the story. As far as I am concerned, a guy can be a slut too, just as a girl can be a... well, whatever is the female equivalent of 'stud'. On the other hand, society at large still considers guy=stud, girl=slut if they both sleep around. I thought we are past the age of enforced celibacy already, but evidently we're not.
I won't say the females in 'Heroes' are underdeveloped or unoriginal. We do have a single mother (who strips online to make the bills, point, but still...), the awkward high school cheerleader, the ditzy but nurturing mother, the misunderstood female FBI agent, the originally unattractive but suddenly glamourous shapeshifter/illusionist, the matriarch who wants to give her son the world on a silver platter, etc. Since 'Heroes' is runs on continuous story arcs, these females do get a chance to become more fleshed-out than the SPN ones. So I must give props to the SPN writers for creating memorable female characters, even if they are Chicks-of-the-Week. Or it could be due to the weekly self-enclosed episode structure of SPN that made me focus more on the women (whom often turn out to play relevant roles, turn evil, etc) even when I know they will only appear once, thus making me take greater notice of them. There's no real way to tell for me. Anyway, to be fair to 'Heroes', they do have a reasonably strong/diverse female cast. It's just that I'd rather focus on the man meat, you know?
