Still alive.

Saw the first season of Dexter - the show is riveting. I was enthralled by the first episode, and I could not stop watching it till I saw the whole of first season. The script is amazing, the acting is superb, and I’m just completely sucked in by the whole series.

I’m impressed that the writers managed to create a character that is both alien and so familiar. Despite the fact that Dexter says he can’t empathise with people and their emotions, the audience nonetheless feel for him through the series. What’s more impressive is that the writers never forget that Dexter is a serial killer; just when you begin to feel for the guy he’ll go and do something that makes your average Joe cringe and cry.

It is not that Dexter doesn’t feel; he’s protective of those he consider his, and I don’t care what people say but he definitely feel for Rita and Deb. Hell, he killed his biological brother to protect Deb, and he acted impulsively when he protected Rita. However, despite that he’s still alien, which is just awesome on so many levels of characterisation. The question of whether it is nature or nurture that makes a killer is further complicated with the appearance of Dexter’s brother Brian.

The flashback of the massacre in the hotel room implies that Dexter became a killer because of the event. However, Brian, the biological brother of Dexter, makes the whole nurture argument moot, yet Dexter is capable of caring for others outside of blood; Deb, Rita, and to a certain extent Angel.

Also, the last few scenes between Brian and Dexter were just phenomenal.

I need a Dexter icon.
