Use a Fantastico install?

*unhelpful, most likely*

No, it is mostly my fault. I tend to tinker with things (I like knowing how things work, this include web applications) and I have, so far, managed to break WP on 4 separate occasions, the frustration is getting to me. According to my IT friend I'm insanely good at breaking things that should not be breakable. In order to cause less problems to the life site I'm in the process of setting up a localhost by installing Apache, MySQL and PHP.

I broke WP on 4 separate occasions. As in I somehow managed to completely destroy the administration side of it on two of those occasions in completely different ways. Apparently what I did shouldn't have been possible, at least that's what the IT friend tells, and considering he has been doing this for over a decade I tend to believe him.

To avoid more problems to the actual site I'm in the process of setting up a localhost by installing Apache, MySQL and PHP.

ooh. i always used to break my WP blogs too, but time and experience have helped me avoid the most fatal mistakes. i kind of really like WP now, it's flexible and easy to customize once you've memorized the ins and outs...

setting up a localhost is a good idea. haven't done it in ages myself, but i sure miss it.

I'm pretty sure it will become easier once I stop making fatal mistakes. Hoping the localhost will let learn without screwing up the real site. This week just has been a long week of WP errors.

So, here's hoping!

It is mostly my own fault. I have a tendency to tinker with everything, and since last September has managed to completely kill my WP on 4 separate occasion in ways that my IT friend swear should be impossible. To avoid more problems to the actual site I'm in the process of setting up a localhost by installing Apache, MySQL and PHP.

A lots of the problem arise from the issue that I'm using WP as an engine for a website rather than a blog. If trouble continues I'm just going to install Joomla.

Ah... Yeah, I'm just using mine as a blog. I think it might be better to use a more CMS oriented software if you are using it as a website, though.

In short I need much practice, and depending on what other functionality I need I may have to install a more CMS oriented software. Let's just say the past week has been a long trial of WB issues.

Eeek, yeah. The thing about WP is that since it's on your own site, you have to be proactive about going out and getting help. And sometimes the site just hiccups and is weird. Like I lost my site for no reason at all, although thankfully it was just the front end and I kept all my data.

Yeah, the loss of data is pretty much why I'm installing a localhost on my own computer, and I'm in the process of figuring out how to set up version control so that I will always have a back of my website at any time.

IIRC, isn't there a sort of plugin which does do automatic backups and send them to you?
[identity profile] naanima.livejournal.com wrote:

I think it is Version Control. It is the application that keep track of all your changes and you can return to any of the changes at any point. I'm getting help to set it up.

Frustrating... Is this for a personal/hobby site, or work-related, out of curiosity?

Actually it is a bit of column A and a bit of column B. I'm trying to make the shift into the marketing department, specialising in e-marketing. There is only so much books you can read before you have to figure out what works and what doesn't in practice. So, I thought I'd combine the two by making my own site and seeing what e-marketing strategies works. This involves messing around with WP blogs, making a site, applying tactics in relation SEOs and advertising, and attempting to sell a product. I don't see it becoming operational until mid-June, but I'm hoping it will be fully operational before Christmas.

And to make sure I keep up the motivation and interest I'm trying to focus on things I love. That would include anime/manga, TV, and Korean boy bands. :D

Hmm, interesting. Is it a software or something? Or an online store?

I'm going via the route of online store. Software cost way too much start-up capital. I'm in the planning phase, and while it is really exciting, work kind of take priority.

If you don't mind sharing your project details, reach me through email and I can maybe point you in the direction of a couple of CMS. I've field-tested at least a dozen CMS/blogs in my never-ending quest for the perfect CMS.
