OK, have thought about this and I would like to explain my displeasure about Torchwood: COE. The thing is it isn't even what 90% of fandom is mad about. Go figure.
1. Ianto dying. Yes, it is sad, but I wasn't too distressed by Ianto dying so much as by Ianto dying a stupid death. His death served no purpose than pushing Jack into more emo-manpain, which is not cool, because Owen and Tosh had deaths that meant something, that saved the day. Their deaths were heroic and were the -right- type of death; Ianto's death is made of overly sentimental tripe while not serving any purpose for the plot. Thus, Ianto's death annoys me and made me scream, “OMFG! FAIL!” at my computer monitor. That is, I have NO problems with Ianto dying, what I have a problem is characters dying because of stupidity.
2. Frobisher's family. Yeah, this one, this one made me fucking mad. I have some major buttons and the way Frobisher went about killing his family, not even giving them a chance pretty much sent me into raging bitch of hell. It was damn selfish to take his family's lives just because he was too fucking weak to deal with his own actions. So yes, fuck you RTD. I have read some people’s thought on this, and there have been a smattering of comments stating that he did the right thing because as a parent you don’t ever want your children to suffer. That Frobisher chose right because shooting his children and his wife is better than letting his children suffer at the hands of aliens. Yeah, well, I’m sorry but we are just going to have to agree to disagree. Because fuck that, anyone who can look me in the eyes and tell me killing children, their own children, so that they may not suffer without letting their own children, or letting their partner know can go and fuck themselves. I’m sorry if this statement makes you feel unwelcome and hurt your feelings, but the fact of the matter is Frobisher killed his family without letting them make a decision. He took away their choice because he was too fucking selfish to face the consequences of his own actions. If killing your children is the right answer so that they won’t suffer than my grandparents would have killed my mother when she was 3. So please do not use this answer as your defence. Just don’t.
3. Jack's stupid plan to TALK to the aliens. Yeah, WTF. I could have dealt without that, and it links up with my #1 point.
4. Jack running at the end actually made me really happy. It was the only decision left for him. But it didn’t have to be if the plot made more sense. Because TALKING to EVIL aliens was NOT the option, and his amazing plan to save the world could have been REALISED EARLIER, oh let’s say before Ianto died. It was just really shoddy planning on the part of the writers.
5. I watch Torchwood for the team, not Jack, not the ghei, and definitely not for the plot. I could deal with Owen and Tosh dying because there was hope for Torchwood, as a team to go on, to survive. But watching the last 2 parts of the mini-series was like the destruction of everything I liked about the show, it was the destruction of a team, of a family, and that fucking sucked.
6. Gwen and Rhys were awesome in this, just ABSOLUTELY awesome. The conversation about the abortion was just wow. Like unbelievably wow.
7. Alice, Stephen and Jack. Yeah. I have got nothing to say but fuck. Just wow. Jack choosing the world over Stephen was the right decision, but as I said before it didn’t have to be if the writers were smart about the plot. But no, they waved the whole stupidity of parts 4&5 to have push for emotional pain and a dystopian world. Yeah, screw you.
In conclusion, Torchwood: COE is a pretty well put together piece of sci-fi barring a few minor hiccups in regards to plot. However, I obviously was watching a different show from what RTD and other writers were trying to sell. So well I can objectively say it is a piece of good work, it isn’t my type of work, and it is completely different from why I was watching Torchwood in the first place.
