ravages of time, sga-rant

naanima: (Screaming fangirls or HYSTERIA!)
[livejournal.com profile] worldserpent, you might like to know that I spent precious accounting-tutorial preparation time yesterday (and this morning around 3:00am) reading Ravages of Time. First off I'd like to say it is a bit too early for me to pass judgement on the series (just finished volume 1), however, I do like the overall feel of it (more 'Chinese' than some of the other adaptations of ROTK) and will definitely be continuing with it.

To tell the truth I'm still trying to get over the urge to squee 'com OMFG! I have this huge soft spot for this particular type of art style. (Though I do have one complaint; the translation causes me massive migraines mainly because I'm pretty sure some of the phonetics is in Cantonese rather than Mandarin, and it takes quite a bit for my brain to go 'Oh! I get it.' I am incapable of making mad leaps of logic at 3 in the morning -_- ;;)

[livejournal.com profile] nekomancy, I just realised that I still have your b-day present at my house. Hmm, must get it to you when I have free time.

ETA 1: Where are the GEN!FANFICTION in Stargate Atlantis?! ALL I WANT is some good TEAM-DYNAMIC fanfiction with PLOT, NO p0rn, and OMFGBBQ!NO ROMANCE! WHY is there a LACK?!

Considering how new sga is the amount of slash in the fandom freaks me out. It is not that I can't see the pairing(s) (het and slash) but I'm more obsessed about the whole 'TEAM-DYNAMIC' and 'OMFG!WRAITH and GENNI!' aspect of the series than I am over specific 'pairings'.

In addition, I kind of think Female!Wraith and Sheppard is kind of hawt. *gets shot*

WOE ME!

ETA 2: [livejournal.com profile] amei, the Batman WON the 'Who's the Cooler Superhero' poll. Eleven votes to Superman's ONE vote. MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! (Hell, even Spiderman won against Superman *sniggers*) The MOB has SPOKEN!

Argh, hope you do well with the tutorial...

(Oh, good to hear that you liked it! Yeah, it is pretty Chinese, although I have no idea on the historical accuracy of the designs, buildings, etc. I like the art style too; no screentone, lots of shading, gives it a different feel, really.)

I gave up in favour of writing down notes on 'Ravages of Time' to quiz dad later on the historical accuracy bits. He get a kick out of pointing out faults in adaptation of 'ROTK' films/series/etc.

(It is very Hong Kong comic-art style. The same depth and the fell of 'weight'... probably the wrong word to use but I'd sure you know what I mean.)

Heh, maybe you can show it to your dad, if he likes that kind of thing, although it probably will shock him to see...the VERY radical reinterpretations going on in there. XD

(The major historical inaccuracy aside from the obvious ones are the ages of some of the major charactes)

(Have never read any other HK comic, so I can't really say? Aside from character designs there is, though, definitely a difference in paneling and motion between, say, RoT and Naruto)

Nah, dad doesn't understand the appeal of animation and comics. But that's OK, we have other common topics to scream discuss.

(I usually let the whole age thing. It is the one thing that's most likely to change. That or getting a few of the characters to be at one place at the same time to create Drama, when the cahracters involved are two/three generations apart. All in the name of Drama.)

(It is very Hong Kong comics style, that include the panelling and so forth. I need to check who wrote/drew the series sometime tonight.)

Exactly. XD In real history, Sima Yi is older than Zhuge Liang, but in the comic, they look to be about the same age, IIRC. So that way their Epic Rivalry (TM) can start in fine style.

The author's name is Chan Mou (or Chen Mou, depending on which dialect, how you romanize it, etc.: 陳某) It's his pen name, actually. The name of the series in Chinese itself translates to something like "The Fire Phoenix Burns the Plains." 火鳳燎原

Ohhhhhh! Epic Rivalry (TM) is LIEK SOOOO Chinese! XD

Point to me! I thought the style was HK/Taiwanese comics-style.

You know it is kind of scary just how many manga artists/manga style you and I can probably recognise if we set our minds to it. Hmm, it is SIGN! We MUST CONTINUE to READ till the DAY WE RECOGNISE EVERYTHING!!

(Excuse the ranting, the morning coffee(s) just kicked in.)

With the way that Sima Yi is the protagonist, I have high hopes for the final confrontations. (Also, did you know that they have other rival great strategists? And that some of these are rather pretty?) BTW, Zhuge Liang appears in ch. 18. I won't give away the details of the settei, but if you take the real history, it's all very cracked out.

Yep, the series is really popular in Taiwan as well. ^_^

It threw me that SiMa Yi is the Protagonist, and Zhuge Liang is the Rival (TM). Most stories tend to make Zhuge Liang the One; can't lose (except when he does but even than it is like a 'really good plan in disguise', and Zhou Yu is liek his biatch *koffs*), and SiMa Yi tend to take a back seat to more popular heroes/villains (LuBu, Cao Cao, Liu Bei etc.)

(Yep, other Rival Strategist are cool and very pretty. The amount of stuff on Zhou Yu is kind of funny. He and Zhuge Liang's Rivalry was kind of one sided ^^;;)

MWAHAHAHA! There's just something about ROTK that grabs attention.

Yeah, it's because Sima Yi isn't really supposed to appear in the novel yet, so Chan Mou can make him do whatever without contradicting history too badly. XD So here he can meet Lu Bu, for example, while he doesn't in the book.

(Oh? How far have you gotten into the story? I didn't want to spoil you about it.... Actually, Zhou Yu and Sun Ce are taking center stage in the current installments.)

See, DRAMA in Action. I honestly don't mind messing with Timelines in order to get REALLY interesting things to happen *giggles*

(I've only finished reading vol.1 haven't had time to read anywhere beyond that point. All I know about ROTK I learnt from dad/live action television series and Dynasty Warriors -_-; But I know the general, and only remember the things that interset me. Like the Naval battle when Zhou Yu pwns, and how Zhuge Liang pwn'd him THREE times. MWAHAHA, and on his death, Zhou Yu liek, 'Gods, why did you make/create/allow the birth of Zhuge Liang when there was already a Zhou Yu.' Or something to that effect. It makes me happy ^^)

That is an Evil laugh. Dare I ask, or should it be quite obvious why you are laughing?

Dad used to read to us ROTK in those tiny blue-cover Chinese picture books when we were small. You know, the expensive, authentic-looking kind o.O

He got a kick out of realising that they had ROTK doujinshis.

I REMEMBER those! They are so cool.

... *laughs* That's just so cool. Um, may I ask what sort of doujin?

*innocent blinking*

O I didn't vote. See all the Supes fans saw through your little plot, and like me, decided to boycott, since it was obviously rigged. (except one dedicated fan.)

Yes, well the MOB thought FF7: Advent Children was cool.

Since I'm all ABOUT EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE here, (the STATISTICS does NOT LIE! I win on the PROBABILITY test!) You are obviously in much pain and DENIAL! It is OK, we all know you are delusional. *pats pats*

(In relation to 'AC' - Biatch, let's not get personal here! :p)

Yes... it might not be what you are expecting. Rather than a 'fun' gift I kind went for something slightly more fancy.

the Death zone (TM) is indeed Evil *nods wisely*
