fanfiction

See, this was going to be a long, deep, analytical essay on me defending fanfiction, then I realised there was no point. I like fanfiction, always have, always will. The end.

P.S. However, for a deep, analytical discussion on the topic. Read [livejournal.com profile] worldserpent's post in, uh, answer to Robin Hobb making a, hmm, none-diplomatic rant against fanfiction.

I'm so glad I never liked Robin Hobb much. Hell, I group her with the present-day Anne Rice.

Half of me upon reading that rant was questioning as to just HOW attatched this woman is to her characters (read: apefuckingnutly?), and for that she's just slapped with this big wtf. She seems determined to take fanfiction as a personal slight, the lines between eludicating WHY she does, and just that she DOES is getting blurred.

But another part of me sort of agrees with the notion of put bluntly "character rape offends original creator" bit of her rant? I get frustrated (understandably) when people take my original characters (sigma) and use them as characters for their roleplay? (Mainly because the renaming of Josh to Chipper Suka Lee pisses me off). While yes, they are applying a different context/world/BRANDNEWCHARACTER, it's still an infringement of my little corner of creativity? And that Hobb is a professional writer shouldn't really be of any circumstance, as it's rather the same as "if you didn't want your stuff to be stolen, then you wouldn't have put it on the internets in the first place!!11" <--which I get a lot.

But that's just me, and I like her books?!?!?! I'm not saying I agree with her, I mean I think she's really missed the point as to WHY fanfiction is written, which tends to nullify most of her arguments, but that little point of omg characterrape I can relate. In various ways.

<--not intellegent, just my view.

There's nothing wrong with expressing a dislike for fanfiction, it is the way she expressed her dislike that irritated me. However, when it is all said and done it is no skin off my nose, 'cos d00d! it isn't as if I actually care about what someone I have never met (and have no respect for) says/write about fanfiction.

For the "character rape offends original creator" aspect, I semi-agree with you. I do think that authors/artists/creators/etc. have a right to express their dislike (oh, ok, outright hatred) of character rape. However, it goes back to how one express their dislike in a way that's diplomatic and none confrontational, rather than sounding like a fanatic with an axe to grind, which Hobb is rather clear on. The former, at least, doesn't attempt to group fanfic writer/artists/fans into one BIG fat assed group, shows respect for the fans, and seems to actually sound logical. The latter usually end up losing all respect I had for them (though I’m rather lucky in the respect, all my favourite authors seem to like fanfiction ^_^V), and more often than not sound like they learned logic from a fucked up monkey. Oh wait, the monkey is much more intelligent.

Is ok, despite your taste I still adore you ;p (I really can't stand her books.)

Ditto!

Unlike you, I ranted and raved for a while this morning...

I don't mind her writing, but her real life perspectives seem a skewed and unenlightened.

"skewed and unenlightened."

You are much kinder than I. Personally, I think she sound like she have an axe to grind, have no perspective, and as I said to [livejournal.com profile] amei sounds as if she learned logic form a fucked up monkey, except the said fucked-up monkey is much nicer.

And I CAN'T stand her writing, the droning, on and on and on and on of angst, the bad pacing, the sheer urge to murder (on my part). Don't even get me started on her characters. Though I admit I ever only read her Assassin books, and one of her Fools book. The former I sat through with gritted teeth, the latter bored me to tears, oh, and I read one her later books about Fitz becoming the tutor of the new Prince, and while he has stopped angsting I came to the realisation that by the gods, he was a boring character. So yes, can’t stand her writing.
