It has come to my attention that I'm sorely lacking in the understanding of Ancient Chinese warfare (<lj site="livejournal.com" user="worldserpent"> <_<). To remedy such a deficiency I shall attempt to read <B>Romance of the Three Kingdoms</B> during the summer break. Of course since my Chinese suck arse I might try to find the kid-friendly version. You know the one with the flowcharts and diagrams to keep track of who is aligned with whom, and who won which battle when, where and how.

(Please tell me there is a kid-friendly version).

(And no, there isn’t any other nefarious reason for wanting to read rotk. Honest.)

Admit it: you're actually planning to take over Australia in costume!

It sounds cool to me. I'm just reading Japanese samurai manuals. :D

How did you guesss?! (but my other nefarious reason is purely for slashing purposes *coughs*).

Japanese samurai manuals. Interesting, but I thought I should get in touch with my own culture first.

(And you left Australia! I was hoping I'd get a chance to meet up with you once my exams are over. Oh well).

...wait, you need knowledge to slash people? :D Haha, oops. Although I do do research for US Founding Fathers slash and Cold War slash that I will probably never write, so who am I to talk?

:D Luckily, I have no culture to get in touch with! (Am an American-born child of Australian immigrant parents, who are themselves kids of immigrants to Australia from Scotland. No time to accumulate a culture in all that.) I may obsess over Miyamoto Musashi all I like.

(I will be back next February! Surely we will find time in the next two years. It's just, I leave for the summer to avoid all that heat. :D)

Well.... yeah. (..... you did research for US Founding Fathers slash and Cold War slash.... please tell me it is in the purely meta sense. pretty please.)

That means you can pick and choose ^_^V (ah, that's why you were in Austrlia, I was wondering about that.) But Musashi deserves to be obsessed about ^_^ (though nowadays whenever anyone mentions Musashi I automatically thank about Cowboy Andy -_-;;)

(Good! And very, very, very smart. If I could I'd love to get out of this heat too. Though the weather have been completely insane lately. I wish it'd make its mind.)

(Er. :D See, um. I actually... OK, I really like the Founding Fathers! And JFK/Khrushchev, man. It might break my OTP, but the tension. I have not actually written any historical RPS, although I am writing a Lucius Malfoy/Thomas Jefferson crossover fic and a zombie story where President Grover Cleveland comes back from the dead to run for president again, both of which are probably just as bad.)

(Ah. Well, I am an Australian citizen. Lived there for part of my primary school years&before, too.) I have Musashi's book. And a book of zen paintings, some of which he drew. And five volumes of the manga Vagabond. I used to have dreams about Musashi. :D (I do not know who Cowboy Andy is, though. Who is he?)

(Yeah! It was all over the place when I left. Raining and then humid and then dry and windy. Weird.)

(d00d! And I thought I was strange. You beat me on the crack hands down. I bow before your um, amazing skillz. Having said all of that the thought of LM/TJ is strangely, and I mea strangely apt. But ohhhhh I want to read the zombie story. I love zombie stories!)

(I hated primary schools here. Worst years of my life.) Vagabond is GOOD! ... and what sort of dreams were they? -_^ (Cowboy Andy appeared in wone episode of 'CowBoy Bebop,' I think it was the episode called 'Teddy Bear Bomber.' Let's just say at teeh end of that episode Andy decided to have a career cahnge. In his own words (while galloping away on a horse), 'Call me Musashi.' I adore the idiot.)

(My fandom profession is 'crack dealer'. I ship Dumbledore/Tonks. :D But, yes! Lucius/Jefferson. I'll let you know when the zombie story is fit for public consumption. :D.

Friend 1: this is a great plan! I foresee that Zombie Cleveland will restore our national prestige!
Me: I'm confident he will.
Friend 1: will zombie cleveland father more illegitimate children?
Friend 1: because that would be gross.
Me: I'm sure he's beyond that now.
Friend 1: he's learned a lot since his death?
Me: No, but I can't imagine the softer tissues would have survived.
Friend 2: And again, somehow I manage to eat.
)

(Oh, I didn't mind it. Only when I moved to California and my teachers made fun of my accent did I start disliking it a bit. :/) It is! And then Eiji Yoshikawa's historical novel! <3. Not that sort of dream, either. Just ones in which I was training with him, and ones where I was having HUGE ZEN EPIPHANIES brought on by playing with swords. :D (Ah! The dorky one.)

Zhu Ge Liang and Zhou Yu!

The obsession on Zhou Yu's part is just a tad too much, and I'm a pure slash fangirl at heart... even if the two aren't exactly equally aesthetics pleasing. The way I figure it Zhou Yu is pretty enough for everyone *coughs*. Beside the sea battle with the burnign ships had always made me giggle for some reason ^^;;

Zhao Yun and Lui Bei isn't bad either. Because you know, there's hero worship and then there's the other sort <_< There are more but my mind can't seem to conjure up the names at the present time ^^;; Now, what about you? *nefariousness*

Yesss. Am curious, though -- if you haven't played Dynasty Warriors, what exactly was it that snagged you into the fandom? o_o

I am, um. Total Zhou Yu fangirl. XD;; The most canonical pairing for him would be with 孫策, I suppose, though the angst is a bit of an overkill. Zhuge Liang's reaction after his death in RotTK kind of puts a damper for me on that pairing, though it's popular in what tiny RotTK fandom there is.

I've only come across two pieces of RotTK fic worth reading -- Chinese, of course, and both by the same author. The first was gen, the second had a glimmer of Zhao Yun/Zhou Yu. I'll dig up links for you after I get home? ♥ Still can't seem to find the RotTK center of Cfandom, though. Woe!

Did someone loan you the Dynasty Warriors game? XD Cuz that's possibly the best way to remember all the names, if nothing else. :-P

Not at the present time. But I'll probly get it off someone once the holidays start. But you are right, it is the easiest (and fastest way) to remember their names *__*

I'll draw up a list for you sometime after Monday,a nd don't worry about last time. I was low on cash anyway ^_^;; But I have money NOW!

I am so sad for reading this post and being completely thrown off by the 'rotk' at the end. "What nefarious reasons could hobbits possibly contribute to!" I AM SO LAME.

But I totally support the concept of flowcharts and diagrams, as people like myself who are not The Best at these sort of things have a deep unrational love for such devices. (Mmm, maps. <3)

*laughs*

I was wondering if anyone was going to make that mistake. The first time I saw the acronym being used it was in one of the Dynasty Warriors game. I had turned around to my boyfriend and asked 'What does Return of the King had to do wiht Romance of the The Three Kingdoms?' It was about half a second afterwards when my mind went 'oh'.

And I LOVE flowcharts and diagrams, especially the multi coloured ones *__* And I stil want someone ot do a flowchart explaining the intricacies involved in ChibiSmut.

spam is fine.

You know, you can always start with the manga version if the Chinese text are too difficult. Yokoyama Mitsuteru's Sankokushi (60 volumes, finished) is a fairly accurate adaptation of the novels.

So, there is an accurate version. Would you happen to know the the mangaka's name in Chinese? (or the publisher?)

I'm pretty sure one of the manga loaner place should have a copy somewhere.

横山光輝. Well, that's in Japanese, but the characters are the same in Chinese. :P

I was reading that in translation last year, but I ran up the library fines on it and I never got around to buying it...I wanted to finish the other East Asian classics I bought first. Still haven't.
