Definition of a fan

So, I was in the process of describing what it meant to be a fan to someone at work today (and not just a fan of the football, sport fans confuse me). I told them that a fan is someone who is in love with an item. The item can be fictional, real; it can take the form of a book, a television series, a celebrity and so forth. Being a fan means you want to know everything about the object of your love.

There was a lot of more hand waving and gesturing, and I’m still unsure whether I came across as sane or not.

The whole thing got me thinking, but how would you explain to someone what a fan is, and do it in a positive manner?

"I love (insert fandom here) the way a woman loves a man. There's lots of drama, anguish and hurt. But on the flip side there is sweetness, fluff and joy. The sex isn't half bad either."

Not to be taken seriously, for real.

... The problem is that it can be so easily taken as the truth.

*facepalm*.

An enthusiastic, sometimes obsessive, emotional attachment to a person, group, concept/idea, work of fiction, object or activity that usually manifests in the form of passionate support, insatiable curiosity, and devotion.

I like. It is very official.

Also, LOVES your ICON!

....I obviously spend too much time reading and interpreting legislative definitions nowadays.

But you are good at it! You are going to kick so much ass, and you have fashion sense too!

Amusingly the majority of people I meet think I look too young to be a lawyer.

It just means you look young for your age, take the compliment!

Meh, would rather take advantage of the fact that people still give me student movie tickets when I ask with wide eyes.

AHAHAHAHA! The question is do you get those tickets or not.

taking a page from doctor who: a fan is something that keeps you cool! (is shot - although that definition could work in certain contexts i think XD)

my personal definition of a fan is simply someone who admires something. it has a lot of levels - you can be an obsessive fan, or a casual fan, or even a conditional fan, what. but as long as you admire something, as long as just thinking about something emotionally affects you in a way that resembles a serotonin rush, you hit the most basic level of fandom. it's easy enough to say "a fan is someone in love," but for me, "love" comes with a lot of other dimensions. fandom, however, is relevant only to admiration.

...does this even make sense, and does it even count as "positive"?

I LOVES Doctor Who!

a conditional fan - I really like this term. Please expand.

No, it makes sense! Especially what you are saying about 'admiration' not so much as love. Because sometime it isn't so much about love as about admiration for a piece of work. I think it is what I am for most of my fandoms. You are so smart! It is more positive than how I was phrasing it, so we'll call it a win.

Q - I have been meaning to ask, what series is your icon made from? The artwork is the type I go ga-ga over.

conditional fan - omg i dunno XD;; i think i meant it in a general sense, i.e. i'm a fan of [object] because of [cause]. this would translate to something like "i'm a fan of sailormoon because my best friend is," or "my favorite singer is a fan of green day, so i'm a fan of green day too." once [object] is done being a fan, so are you. but you still got your emotional fix from that stint. a fan is a fan.

i think another term for it would be "bandwagoner"?

as for the icon, this would be katekyou hitman reborn. i'd rec it enthusiastically for the art alone, although i must warn you that the awesome art (and the story, to be honest) only begins at around volume 8 ^^ before then, you have seven volumes of crack and character introduction. it's actually fun, so i hope you'll give it a go :3

i'm a fan of [object] because of [cause]. That is all sorts of awesome. One day when I write my great book of being a fangirl I shall use that term to define conditional fan! MWAHAHAHAHAHA! Bandwagoner is actually quite suitable for the term.

The artwork for the series looks all sorts of awesome.

Thanks!
